Sunset Celebration Weekend Preview

Sunset Headquarters_Entrance

Starting tomorrow, Sunset Celebration Weekendan annual event held at Sunset headquarters, will be in full swing. This year’s event is bound to be extra special as it will be the last Celebration Weekend held at their current location. Sunset recently announced they are moving their headquarters to Oakland, CA after being in their Menlo Park location for more than 60 years. This much-loved tradition bringing together Sunset’s editors along with celebrity chefs, and lifestyle experts to share the region’s hottest trends is sure to be entertaining, educational and very exciting!

There will be three featured exhibits this year that include the Sunset Backyard Cottage and Garden, Camp Sunset, and the hands-on “Winemaker for a Day” wine-blending seminar. You can also find cooking demonstrations from celebrity chefs, travel tips from the region’s experts, beer seminars and a rock climbing wall in the kid’s zone.

I was fortunate enough to receive an invitation, as part of a media preview, to visit Sunset and explore their iconic headquarters. We met and visited with editors. Toured the test kitchen and wine cellar. Walked through the gardens and got a behind-the-scenes look at all the prep taking place. I will forever have a different perspective of what goes into each of their publications.

Here’s a little peek into my day.

During our tour of the Backyard Cottage and Garden we had the opportunity to meet interior designer and creative director for Homepolish, Orlando Soria. My favorite piece Orlando incorporated into the cottage’s decor was the canoe sculpture full of curious passengers. Another favorite feature which left me inspired was Sunset’s demonstration of how to landscape using drought-tolerant plants. Very much-needed here in California.

We enjoyed a fun camp cocktail demonstration featuring the Forest Negroni, a spin-off of an Italian cocktail made with gin, vermouth, and Campari. We also enjoyed a Fancy Lemonade Spritzer made with a simple syrup infused with ginger and rosemary that I loved. The earthy flavor of gin in the Negroni and the hint of rosemary in the spritzer made these both perfect camping cocktails.  Both were different yet equally fun and delicious.

Both Garden Design Assistant, Lauren Dunec Hoang and Garden Editor, Kathleen Brenzel {both pictured below} spent time walking the gardens with us. They shared about new vegetable and herb varietals they are experimenting with and what new florals they’ve introduced to the gardens. The gardens are spectacular to walk through and open to the public. Yay! Get information about the gardens and when to visit HERE.

I wasn’t sure it was possible but I’m an even bigger Sunset fan after my visit. Great company! Great people! It will be exciting to visit their new waterfront location in Jack London Square. I’ve included a news clip below if you’d like to learn more about Sunset’s move or you can read about it HERE.

This sounds like a lovely event! I’m excited to keep an eye out for Sunset in Oakland with many of my travels bringing me back to that area. I particularly love the feature of drought-resistant plants. I feel so many of my California friends’ energies drained by altered gardens and landscapes that were once so much more lush.
